<div>
I have had an exciting year with many challenges</div>
<div>
One of the best activities I have been involved with is the Bsueboutiques group on face book.</div>
<div>
By participating each week in 2 show and tell sessions, Work Table Wednesday and Finished up Friday, I have filled my shop with jewelry. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The pair of earrings above is an example of recent design work. These are meant to resemble Victorian jewelry. </div>
Made with modern elements I have achieved a slightly historic look. These still need some changes, primarily in changing jump rings to match in color.<br />

To follow up on the making of the Ostrich cabochon I am in the shop using a roary tool to cut down the shell. First I mounted a diamond cutting wheel in the Dremel.<br />

I hold the Dremel against the bench pin and rotate the shell against the bottom side of the wheel. I use the bottom as it throws the ground off bits away from me.<br />

After cutting very close to the line traced on the inside of the shell with a sharpie, I have switched to a fiber cutting wheel as it is less aggressive. I check frequently the fit with the bezel as I sand it down. Finally it fits easily into the bezel.<br />
Lots of labor and the result is a bit bland in this bright light. But the natural opalescence of the shell will show. <br />

I bought an Ostrich egg to make a slump mold for my ceramic work. After casting the inside of the thick end of the egg, I had lots of material to do something else with. I immediately thought of making a cabochon.. I traced around the outside of an open back bezel with a sharpie. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_-dmJkCBo5Dvoe9msq1SZTKpsJs7Xz0F09LCOFVUN5qtwzWQL9I1VQPXmfp_af8put04KzjvhikJNhdM40zfgBz1xjK7y6CtrL4Obibtd52ZWxUCLXso2UAFPnBUs3FsmScJOltQdg_M/s1600/IMG_7795.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_-dmJkCBo5Dvoe9msq1SZTKpsJs7Xz0F09LCOFVUN5qtwzWQL9I1VQPXmfp_af8put04KzjvhikJNhdM40zfgBz1xjK7y6CtrL4Obibtd52ZWxUCLXso2UAFPnBUs3FsmScJOltQdg_M/s320/IMG_7795.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Next I cut through the line with a small rotary diamond wheel. Any rotary tool with a diamond bit can handle the thick egg shell quickly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjMiy9lGfe4rBRmCAUI33zlpB4jCQnpPEPHDQeSUhxTWgghvpulBGOafXJ_x-tqIXifKUFxcyAh1GHQouFHpmlDH-eUOPHasX9UzlyY4d_Qk-IHJW89l0W-6V8Fx9TGjOuoLSv1fSdhQM/s1600/IMG_7796.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjMiy9lGfe4rBRmCAUI33zlpB4jCQnpPEPHDQeSUhxTWgghvpulBGOafXJ_x-tqIXifKUFxcyAh1GHQouFHpmlDH-eUOPHasX9UzlyY4d_Qk-IHJW89l0W-6V8Fx9TGjOuoLSv1fSdhQM/s320/IMG_7796.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Now I have a rough and slightly oversize oval about 30x40 mm. This will get pared down to fit the bezel. Next time I will show how I complete the shape.Harry's Handmade Jewelry Ideashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12807562015740332483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1659884858170312278.post-68373091729339941802018-03-05T09:34:00.001-06:002018-03-05T09:34:34.502-06:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">Hi Folks. Been a while. I have found many things to keep me busy and I have felt bad about not posting for so long. Last May 26 I had a stroke which made my eyes work very poorly, not together. I had to retrain them to see well enough to read. I learned to walk with a walker for a while and still have balance and dizziness issues. And tremors. For a jewelry maker, the tremors are the most time consuming condition. I can spend a minute trying to close a jump ring. So to force that away I chose to start doing more beading. Crazy , right? But when I run into a challenge I work hard to work around it. And that has carried over into my photography. I found a new camera that has 5 way image stabilization. That suppresses the tremors quite well.</span><br />

Part of the practical application of my self therapy is making earrings. The challenge is to combine a few elements into an interesting presentation. To this end I have been shopping at https://www.bsueboutiques.com/ Where I can buy quality components from the B'sue by 1928 section. The pewter wings are from there. The beads also are from Bsue. You can find great quality and a massive selection of interesting components for your art.<br />

In addition to making jewelry I work in ceramics. One of my favorites is antique German dolls and figures. I recently acquired a box of Angels from Germany. They had been discarded in the 1800's at a ceramics factory. They were discovered and dug up and have come to me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Each is a bit different . Some have heavy glazes that cover some details. Others have thin glaze and sharper details. As a mold is used they do lose detail. <br />

Now what would you do with them? First you could re-purpose them and just hang the piece on the wall. Perhaps if you have a rotary tool with a diamond cutoff wheel you could remove the rough bottom to make them look better. How about making a mold? Find a Cardboard box that is 1-3 inches deep fill the bottom with non hardening oil clay and press the figure into the clay slightly. Spray the figure and the box with cooking spray and pour plaster of paris into the box. When it has set in an hour or overnight for more strength remove the box and clay and carefully pull the original. You can now use the mold to make reproductions. Those could be used for mixed media art. Or pour liquid clay slip into the mold and make a new piece.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU8wit9cpIExqE9PHzJo4mErWsM4GXT3snNm6Dk5PRYtuaGIEov0Hfo1Lla2br2ZW-EHckhTNoB_7_xKCWdHS4S9wYc-LYY9QYDlBjClRMPEAau2NdSNWilGnqyzaBBO30yH5PqArhWes/s1600/IMG_0940.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiU8wit9cpIExqE9PHzJo4mErWsM4GXT3snNm6Dk5PRYtuaGIEov0Hfo1Lla2br2ZW-EHckhTNoB_7_xKCWdHS4S9wYc-LYY9QYDlBjClRMPEAau2NdSNWilGnqyzaBBO30yH5PqArhWes/s320/IMG_0940.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I do that and fire the clay as Raku or use porcelain Precious metal clay could be pushed into the mold and you could create metal jewelry with the result.<br />
<br />
Really so many things could be created. Even restored pieces could be made.<br />
<br />
Of course you can find these for sale at my Etsy shop Oscarcrow. Come take a look<br />

The bracelet is simply chain and leaf with a magnetic catch. The chain is non soldered links so it attaches just by opening the link and closing it after inserting the links through the opening in the leaf.<br />

This doll fragment is about 100 years old from Germany. When I saw her I knew that a frame would create a great necklace.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After placing her into the opening and gluing her down with E-6000. The back protrudes about 1/2 of an inch.<br />

Her arm is also proud of the surface about 1/4 inch. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8sSdFY7hX4oaEHghAaEWjQuaUnYsSeYSDSfp2bT7RVxscZT0bKruf0CGR1AcpCI2hUIYj05s5kkoLMJXkyu2Xi_IUarC5sJLsn8vZFaRTn9rxBSQVkUwK61ABrWyT0_j8ISCQIT8DPpA/s1600/ablog++4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8sSdFY7hX4oaEHghAaEWjQuaUnYsSeYSDSfp2bT7RVxscZT0bKruf0CGR1AcpCI2hUIYj05s5kkoLMJXkyu2Xi_IUarC5sJLsn8vZFaRTn9rxBSQVkUwK61ABrWyT0_j8ISCQIT8DPpA/s320/ablog++4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I cut out a piece of 28 gauge copper sheet for the backing. I could have made a box form but having too much depth behind the figure seemed clumsy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgooAS00_kKAA0_qG0Y-NOHKPj5-dhRXHKfRhZH_EygubFhyphenhyphenMk9XQq-m9_0-EMo5wMRIPAUf8HaYPpuk7jBiTTkAnBNQGdkhMrPGuNLUeDj8mZLV0L2Bg9vMCchWLM-RsS51AKwmUan-ek/s1600/ablog++5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgooAS00_kKAA0_qG0Y-NOHKPj5-dhRXHKfRhZH_EygubFhyphenhyphenMk9XQq-m9_0-EMo5wMRIPAUf8HaYPpuk7jBiTTkAnBNQGdkhMrPGuNLUeDj8mZLV0L2Bg9vMCchWLM-RsS51AKwmUan-ek/s320/ablog++5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
So I decided to hammer form a depression into the metal. This is 28 gauge which is about 1/2 mm and must be stretched slowly with a lot of annealing. First step is to locate the point that will be deepest and mark it with a single hammer blow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi2ecaJLvorj0pFNvm-rumTXd7Vy2WM2X_Fk60RNl0beLg7wm6IMt1ycGDywA6a4b7CvXeIY0OEJihHyI9h23RBTxKErUGB_WPrSzWsq_Cxw1JeD_HojfRAW33S0VcI8gvKv77Lhpvnhw/s1600/ablog++6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi2ecaJLvorj0pFNvm-rumTXd7Vy2WM2X_Fk60RNl0beLg7wm6IMt1ycGDywA6a4b7CvXeIY0OEJihHyI9h23RBTxKErUGB_WPrSzWsq_Cxw1JeD_HojfRAW33S0VcI8gvKv77Lhpvnhw/s320/ablog++6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The metal is placed over a depression in the dapping block and light blows begin to form the cup.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheBj-gYrDHRYIzKtfawm7smnq3mJi_DwJPnluZUNx4k6oPsbrDKRTtLnsWIt81LDkEduK672fwnSkXjiCvBqqv19Gdw5p-Sld9itcCf8GAjDEdO9kCMQzjYthxYcfRVW_jEaSVcbsXqZE/s1600/ablog++7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheBj-gYrDHRYIzKtfawm7smnq3mJi_DwJPnluZUNx4k6oPsbrDKRTtLnsWIt81LDkEduK672fwnSkXjiCvBqqv19Gdw5p-Sld9itcCf8GAjDEdO9kCMQzjYthxYcfRVW_jEaSVcbsXqZE/s320/ablog++7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
8-10 light blows or taps will result in a rough depression. Anneal the metal and repeat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizl4oodEcFdXEUDVXrw4ee8MOb5TLs7s3W70Xdm3hGEgKen472Ot7d3HC6ku7Xm8s-iZ_eYrxC5jkedjNdRMmhsEIKYc38QFwlc7v6wCOAdiOnFzWFEuC6-4FALhicUbDJAirThhUccQY/s1600/ablog++8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizl4oodEcFdXEUDVXrw4ee8MOb5TLs7s3W70Xdm3hGEgKen472Ot7d3HC6ku7Xm8s-iZ_eYrxC5jkedjNdRMmhsEIKYc38QFwlc7v6wCOAdiOnFzWFEuC6-4FALhicUbDJAirThhUccQY/s320/ablog++8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The cup will form and the surrounding will wrinkle a bit. After more annealing and work on both top and bottom the metal will become close to what is needed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw6Y2OuU7j50jQ7GeKhngwbvhyHCW1g3vtsiSMYjZxXoFbrHFeKIAMbGHzpVdIw7EccJrBMb4jmYLowSRHrVxc16J0DqAr0jqo0c5Vqj1nfvr6Wj-STXflTAb-ozUr4V63-jyOrgtdDiM/s1600/ablog++9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw6Y2OuU7j50jQ7GeKhngwbvhyHCW1g3vtsiSMYjZxXoFbrHFeKIAMbGHzpVdIw7EccJrBMb4jmYLowSRHrVxc16J0DqAr0jqo0c5Vqj1nfvr6Wj-STXflTAb-ozUr4V63-jyOrgtdDiM/s320/ablog++9.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

More annealing and hammer work gives a good depth.<br />

Many light blows later and the form is complete.<br />

The backing was trimmed more and pickled. Then heat was applied to make the color dull a bit. I spread E-6000 around the edges and clamped it together.<br />

I hope you liked this simple tutorial . It is easy to use sheet metal in you own pieces. Sometimes I find beating metal is just fun. Give it a try.Harry's Handmade Jewelry Ideashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12807562015740332483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1659884858170312278.post-61462794088007670692015-09-25T07:17:00.001-05:002015-09-25T07:17:45.866-05:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For this blog hop I decided to use the necktie form. While my version is a bit tongue in cheek it is never the less a serious attempt at pulling together vintage pieces and style with a creative spirit. It is titled "Looking for Love in Cupid's Garden".<br />
The vintage cupid is riveted to the tie form as is the crown mount at the top. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLLoCEshhzf1n_Clg5ivJfMSHkFKo0vr7Tg7mXX9IempYzsVLwGakVdvGYeM5ApkNdgRZDY4F80fC0lK22dqs8AqM1yF312RI7OHkBlOucCeHCCDs2w3hHrvlMb6gpXPgJ7y-rdVw9y88/s1600/ablog++2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLLoCEshhzf1n_Clg5ivJfMSHkFKo0vr7Tg7mXX9IempYzsVLwGakVdvGYeM5ApkNdgRZDY4F80fC0lK22dqs8AqM1yF312RI7OHkBlOucCeHCCDs2w3hHrvlMb6gpXPgJ7y-rdVw9y88/s320/ablog++2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The neckline is patterned after a squash blossom necklace but made with Czech glass and caged pearls<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0qHmqjl9YOnJdqCQuSV2c0u8c3GtjjLGjuVjWiuR6XXwfh6nrK-ndV19vD5gzmAWuZpUJVb_4X7e7utQGA5yCNhc7ZvddmnhlCRBa73PuKvIBazdyjZXSBbtyg_RP1y73ub5O-kfPhHw/s1600/ablog++3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0qHmqjl9YOnJdqCQuSV2c0u8c3GtjjLGjuVjWiuR6XXwfh6nrK-ndV19vD5gzmAWuZpUJVb_4X7e7utQGA5yCNhc7ZvddmnhlCRBa73PuKvIBazdyjZXSBbtyg_RP1y73ub5O-kfPhHw/s320/ablog++3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
From top to bottom it is filled with elements similar to the 1960-70 era. Rhinestones both vintage and new provide the sparkle and a doll eye from 1865 tops off this eclectic piece.<br />

Last time I showed you these earring mountings. I hope by showing you a new to you old tool of mine, the ring clamp, I can give you confidence to set stones yourself. This ring clamp is 40 years old and is still available through RioGrande and other tool suppliers. It has leather jaws that won't mar the finish on the mountings. A wedge is pushed into the bottom of the tool to secure the mounting.<br />
<br />

This lever back is ready with stone dropped in and sitting flat. You can use almost any thing to push the prongs down over the stone. I use the rubber handles of a pair of pliers. Start in one spot then cross to the opposite side. Then repeat. Push the prong down smoothly to sit against the stone.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You can see the prongs tight against the crystal. No glues are involved, just the prongs.<br />

To set a post back, I moved to a side position in the clamp.<br />

This is Swarovski's newest snowflake design with matching mount. There are 3 prongs to hold the star shaped snowflake.<br />

Holes around the base allow for wiring or stitching this setting to your project. I chose a head pin with a heart and started a loop on top.<br />

Here I held the mounting in my hand and pressed with a wooden stick against the 3 prongs Which fold into grooves on the snowflake. <br />

The follow up from my last post is this bracelet. All the stones came in and I picked these to fill the cups.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg7I6_woF5l5wKhqID2SB-CGWuQD8UVCSBhuoVe3hSCvSz40V2ugsksCg_waiCqxLXIlyLhj29GIXjn7SWkujbYjyqMi35ttpr7lewTdQRBKebaepeD4y2udHTJ-9Rim3LEaQ1EQK9zpQ/s1600/ablog++2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg7I6_woF5l5wKhqID2SB-CGWuQD8UVCSBhuoVe3hSCvSz40V2ugsksCg_waiCqxLXIlyLhj29GIXjn7SWkujbYjyqMi35ttpr7lewTdQRBKebaepeD4y2udHTJ-9Rim3LEaQ1EQK9zpQ/s320/ablog++2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
To mount these stones I chose to get this cup tool. The concave end will bend the prongs quickly and evenly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHZUaJk5fKRiGUUkvRIp50sE8mfCb4XDRdw-Wz7pSh0xgJPjiJFLPYEL2CQeLG8LDL5rjGPiuxooicLu-bFnk7Dp0cTlt65hkyaXai2o3IcEh8M-4n-j0SC9gGu3yNRn0dw53VW8RZC8E/s1600/ablog++3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHZUaJk5fKRiGUUkvRIp50sE8mfCb4XDRdw-Wz7pSh0xgJPjiJFLPYEL2CQeLG8LDL5rjGPiuxooicLu-bFnk7Dp0cTlt65hkyaXai2o3IcEh8M-4n-j0SC9gGu3yNRn0dw53VW8RZC8E/s320/ablog++3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The tool has a comfortable handle and makes the job go quickly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7r1JAX7DHLy5F_-G_HEDgOp-QE905DsRAU5rT7jPrywafep3dM-aVuD5wqbCvhyegqJXsDLayUsKHLjIu0jwM21Jr-qbkb5x4GnFinu_0z3TQJu6-jRbxeWhuVZBTQFn5pBHygdBY_eI/s1600/ablog++4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="275" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7r1JAX7DHLy5F_-G_HEDgOp-QE905DsRAU5rT7jPrywafep3dM-aVuD5wqbCvhyegqJXsDLayUsKHLjIu0jwM21Jr-qbkb5x4GnFinu_0z3TQJu6-jRbxeWhuVZBTQFn5pBHygdBY_eI/s320/ablog++4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Place the tool over the cup with the stone centered. Make sure the setting is on a firm surface. I grabbed a magazine this time and will use a bench block next time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpmI53sxRr9o1ZLpIKAFRPwvkJX_5QcgaveWngNxR8etOl1fWSHcFLwXT_MJj-VEMbwMnnKPnvsCiEwcDS3IMb3Y8QBM_elfI5pME85k4eZvRQSupziMtKXIICqJ82AKG7U6DfMR-KUno/s1600/ablog++5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpmI53sxRr9o1ZLpIKAFRPwvkJX_5QcgaveWngNxR8etOl1fWSHcFLwXT_MJj-VEMbwMnnKPnvsCiEwcDS3IMb3Y8QBM_elfI5pME85k4eZvRQSupziMtKXIICqJ82AKG7U6DfMR-KUno/s320/ablog++5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The finished product is attractive and should sell well. If you are wondering what happened to the big necklace, it was found to be made incorrectly and the stones could not fit without overlapping.<br />

What you see here is manufactured empty cup chain jewelry. On the left is a piece called Empty Large Statement Necklace it is in silver ox and uses 2-14mm rivoli stones,1-18 mm rivoli, 2-18x13 octagon stones and 2- 20x15mm octagons, and an oval 25x18 . The gold plated bracelet has room for 128.5mm round rhinestone and a 12mm square. Just think of all the different combinations you could invent with these. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The 18mm rivoli is a deep blue and I have many other colors to pick from. to fill in the remaining spaces. Almost instant bling.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNyvB8QFnJoyyQdEmtFMJefo_0Rcxr438V8oYZSryTffI0OK7dEV4xYDbQ0zYmsBVz9_RJrP_q0sVsjZpAr8nr7oyNZOpdiTomvQEhagQYxcv-29XiLQIE-d1xAKn1q8Uihk5fWgpzBck/s1600/blog++3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNyvB8QFnJoyyQdEmtFMJefo_0Rcxr438V8oYZSryTffI0OK7dEV4xYDbQ0zYmsBVz9_RJrP_q0sVsjZpAr8nr7oyNZOpdiTomvQEhagQYxcv-29XiLQIE-d1xAKn1q8Uihk5fWgpzBck/s400/blog++3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I filled in a few stones in the bracelet with clear crystal. The center is called Blue Shade. These are easy to mount. Just push over opposing prongs with a pusher or like I do with a 1/4 inch square wood stick. If you slip soft wood does not hurt the glass. The nice thing is you can play with colors without mounting any, just set the stones in place. The quality is good and the price can be what you choose, as you source the rhinestones in this case 39ss or 8.5mm. When the other stones come in I will finalize the color design and post the designs for you to see. Average time to assemble the bracelet is 8 minutes. A bit less for the necklace.<br />
Empty cup chain jewelry is fun to work with. Ends and clasps are usually included. Give it a try you wont be disappointed.Harry's Handmade Jewelry Ideashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12807562015740332483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1659884858170312278.post-19025753893252549822015-04-23T09:14:00.002-05:002015-04-23T09:14:36.160-05:00Thinking out loud on paper AKA designing Inspiration from Math, Magic, and History<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A page from my scratchings. Sometimes different disciplines come together to aid my jewelry making. Remember math class? Ratios? Comparing one thing to another? I use that in jewelry often to create classically dimensioned pieces. Lower left is a simple design for a pin based on the "Golden Mean"<br />

Some twentieth-century <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artist" title="Artist">artists</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Architect" title="Architect">architects</a>, including <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Corbusier" title="Le Corbusier">Le Corbusier</a> and <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dal%C3%AD" title="DalÃ">DalÃ</a>, have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio—especially in the form of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_rectangle" title="Golden rectangle">golden rectangle</a>, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio—believing this proportion to be <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aesthetics" title="Aesthetics">aesthetically</a> pleasing.<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematician" title="Mathematician">Mathematicians</a> since <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclid" title="Euclid">Euclid</a> have studied the properties of the golden ratio, including its appearance in the dimensions of a <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_pentagon" title="Regular pentagon">regular pentagon</a> and in a golden rectangle, which may be cut into a square and a smaller rectangle with the same <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio" title="Aspect ratio">aspect ratio</a>. <span>So after all that its just a way to find pleasing shapes with a number....some would say a magical number. <br />
<span>That brings me to the square top right which is like the path around and up to the top of a pyramid, the path of the soul in Egyptian philosophy. And so enters the third discipline. Archeology and history. Look to all these to find inspiration for art jewelry.</span><br />
<br />
<span>And right center is the beginnings of a real piece conceived in doodles on the back of a discarded printout of a map.</span><br />

A possible customer contacted me and wrote "Hello,<br />
This is a beautiful piece, but if I were to buy it, could the lizard be
removed? I would like only the bird in the scene with the flowers. <br />
Thanks very much for your time and reply. You have a large number of some great pieces offered..." I had to think for a minute about a reply. Was this person asking to redesign my work, my art? Or did she see some potential that I did not? Should my artistic vision be upheld? Silly prideful thoughts for sure. I do make art and yet unlike someone pointing to a spot on one of my canvasses and saying put in a happy little cabin and I will buy it...This request actually improved the piece in my opinion. The texture and fold formed copper looks more inviting than the crowded look with the lizard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1ayTjMl0RWSHGaDwLgHVV7w5diUMavvkoa2zSj5ZiXbFPCm25D-cKwfbI0fiIkMB5SvmuONhNvhZnVuKhtP3vHJXt_g2YQFUixtHFb-wejNfQN58p4bZ4kAhqKvRLWnp90wFfvfl0D3E/s1600/P1020089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1ayTjMl0RWSHGaDwLgHVV7w5diUMavvkoa2zSj5ZiXbFPCm25D-cKwfbI0fiIkMB5SvmuONhNvhZnVuKhtP3vHJXt_g2YQFUixtHFb-wejNfQN58p4bZ4kAhqKvRLWnp90wFfvfl0D3E/s1600/P1020089.JPG" height="262" width="320" /></a></div>
So instead of a stiff necked posture, I carefully removed the painted lizard. When I sent the picture this potential customer said she would like to buy it. I hope she does. But her suggestion may have improved the piece quite a bit.<br />

This was just finished yesterday. The center is a raku clay form made from a silicone mold. The glaze colors are picked up in the copper patina of the chain.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This also became real yesterday . Combining different colors of brass,gold,silver, and the bob cat glass eye gives a fresh look. In time the brass will darken to match the ring around the eye.<br />

This big raw brass flower has good bones, but needs a little more flavor.<br />

Paints and inks can add color while opalescent powders can add sparkle. Combining them is easy and can be fun if you are just a bit relaxed with technique. In art this is called a painterly approach.<br />

I started with a Ranger Patina in a deep green.<br />

<br />
Welcome to my shop, Creations Ash!<br />
<br />
Please come in and take a look around. You will find a variety of styles
here as I do not design in simply one genre. I do a lot of mixed media
jewelry because I love to create. You will also find Victorian jewelry,
jewelry from the Romantic era, Noir jewelry, Steam punk pieces, Goth
influenced jewelry, and others. Everything I make is designed and
created by me. That means you will receive an artisan designed jewelry
piece that is one of a kind. I don't limit myself to one style because,
when I create, I go where my imagination takes me. I have the best job
in the world because I always allow myself to create freely, and I
believe it shows in my work.<br />
<br />
If you have any questions, please feel free to convo me, I will not only
be happy to help you; I will be happy to hear from you! <br />
<br />
In the event you would like a piece you do not see in the shop, I do
custom work for my clients. I can personalize your dream piece of
jewelry just for you. It will become a family heirloom! Again, all you
have to do is contact me (convo me) and we can discuss what you would
like, the colors and metals you prefer, and so on. It is a very simple
process that results in stunning results. :)<br />
<br />
Always remember we offer - FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE - on everything in the shop. This is a courtesy to our clients. With the holiday season underway I wanted to show you another quick ring project. I have been looking at some vintage style stampings and this floral basket stamping appealed to me. It resembles a woven basket with flowers. The ring shank is my usual cigar band http://www.bsueboutiques.com/product-p/brox0902.htm<br />
in brass ox finish which matches the filigree. Also the stone mount is in gold filled sterling and the brighter color enhances the natural peridot faceted stone. Holes are punched through the centers of each component. To assemble them I add a dab of E-6000 glue on top of the ring and the bottom of the snap mount. The 1/16 diameter rivet is pushed through the stack and the assembly is set aside to firm up.<br />

After about 20 minutes the stack is taken to the riveter and the center is flattened to secure the stack. <br />

Here is the riveted stack ready for the setting of the stone.<br />

The stone is set table down on the work surface with the ring above.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiunIbACULts0IF83hnCZbpQRGly_zpWxoI7QP0cqws-VzdANAasWoDE8tDVw02g6D0MeX-yNsCKLkdRFu0WQC7jXoa3atLKanlPBco4lzYm2lShSjgUsQzmR9HMcXJ6UZHDaDxElmOees/s1600/blog++5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiunIbACULts0IF83hnCZbpQRGly_zpWxoI7QP0cqws-VzdANAasWoDE8tDVw02g6D0MeX-yNsCKLkdRFu0WQC7jXoa3atLKanlPBco4lzYm2lShSjgUsQzmR9HMcXJ6UZHDaDxElmOees/s1600/blog++5.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Pressure is applied until the snap sound of the prongs closing around the stone is heard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBUrXI_jRTvA9dQR57TCjCEPvBdnNAPyWccHbuaX0Sxa4wyOarSQj-1l-ax4JIK5X0fQI0Bg3TcysmtPSeyqoiRuXElCbXGhBr6oukdsUTmIafLneMP7w8Qrms0e-D67j4z9jSuY71df8/s1600/blog++6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBUrXI_jRTvA9dQR57TCjCEPvBdnNAPyWccHbuaX0Sxa4wyOarSQj-1l-ax4JIK5X0fQI0Bg3TcysmtPSeyqoiRuXElCbXGhBr6oukdsUTmIafLneMP7w8Qrms0e-D67j4z9jSuY71df8/s1600/blog++6.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I checked the prongs and adjusted them with a prong pusher and pliers until the stone was secure. <br />

The finished ring has a very Victorian look, sort of like an old basket.<br />

These are the basic components for a new necklace I created this week. The metal parts come from http://www.bsueboutiques.com/<br />
and the head is from my shop at Etsy. https://www.etsy.com/listing/203394408/excavated-antique-porcelain-german-doll?ref=shop_home_active_13 I have hundreds available in almost every style from 1850-1910 in age. This head is from 1850-60 and is soft porcelain.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuiLBfHbm75MM0aRKVKa68R4XVX0j0-AjcMnROLbvO2U6PNMPwgE52JK3pHv51QQ7ax9rrd7p1sWAibAnNg4penjsb1KE8GR819P1qv7sdyd0e-sitSnYpMhQ5mfDUAfukFxKns3qeYNE/s1600/ablog++2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuiLBfHbm75MM0aRKVKa68R4XVX0j0-AjcMnROLbvO2U6PNMPwgE52JK3pHv51QQ7ax9rrd7p1sWAibAnNg4penjsb1KE8GR819P1qv7sdyd0e-sitSnYpMhQ5mfDUAfukFxKns3qeYNE/s1600/ablog++2.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
In the first operation I formed the back a bit to accept the head using a dapping block and punch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGUEKhiCmT5lY-cfPprgh0PCYOqxyzYhenOSEhrwgGl0KYdGBolS8w5EwFhUvOL7hKhQWECyBJ0XzLWRoKkqU5a0qZpP3GkigStJDfB1dNjcj27EsxwfzmjzzXPhjQAewMrAMdZNoJcCE/s1600/ablog++3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGUEKhiCmT5lY-cfPprgh0PCYOqxyzYhenOSEhrwgGl0KYdGBolS8w5EwFhUvOL7hKhQWECyBJ0XzLWRoKkqU5a0qZpP3GkigStJDfB1dNjcj27EsxwfzmjzzXPhjQAewMrAMdZNoJcCE/s1600/ablog++3.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Next I notched the side rails to allow the head to fit back into the frame.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJtpU2WOtU85FJXtSz8Mt0dMVFlnvR6Vb85_NujSr5Djgj-UcsQkiCffOxtgeiOF-p8oPREbO-56NvUOS7SiiFNH1vqYpO_5anNrs2OfrW9lpdyL-XBnTxB1cBjldj_S4oWbVAgmv9jEM/s1600/ablog++4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJtpU2WOtU85FJXtSz8Mt0dMVFlnvR6Vb85_NujSr5Djgj-UcsQkiCffOxtgeiOF-p8oPREbO-56NvUOS7SiiFNH1vqYpO_5anNrs2OfrW9lpdyL-XBnTxB1cBjldj_S4oWbVAgmv9jEM/s1600/ablog++4.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Here it is partially fitted and the bottom edge of the doll is smoothed with sandpaper to clean up the line along the edge.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNJV7JuU5izWghVcNWS3krp1F9FoQL48Vt-SocPrtV5dZqBjq0cjGo1k7Q3ugFgviv3fl4A6R_xX7rw-4KBPEyRTnvUU8rvJcspmg3jnKIcoMTDHkYb7dqisVE1G2SioXqFKE-jaAG4AY/s1600/ablog++5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNJV7JuU5izWghVcNWS3krp1F9FoQL48Vt-SocPrtV5dZqBjq0cjGo1k7Q3ugFgviv3fl4A6R_xX7rw-4KBPEyRTnvUU8rvJcspmg3jnKIcoMTDHkYb7dqisVE1G2SioXqFKE-jaAG4AY/s1600/ablog++5.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The metal needed annealing with a torch to soften the metal for bending around the front piece.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZoQbuke5-0jGAcDpCBz6FK8IWcFFLvokkSy9pJKwnqJdf8JnlAZXV1baKJSEf4Agai1rlFczSDjVqN8gQMeXruYUoHJ1q-qA1lWmxE3s-MEWuh9ilgw95vO8FLEydJU9nT-ihdhEuzxg/s1600/ablog++6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZoQbuke5-0jGAcDpCBz6FK8IWcFFLvokkSy9pJKwnqJdf8JnlAZXV1baKJSEf4Agai1rlFczSDjVqN8gQMeXruYUoHJ1q-qA1lWmxE3s-MEWuh9ilgw95vO8FLEydJU9nT-ihdhEuzxg/s1600/ablog++6.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
It is also fitted to match the groove around the head and the overlapping is crimped with pliers. I wanted a clean look with a bit more elegance to the top so this next addition gives that and a place to hide the chain connection.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj13vE7W4VY_D2tsL6IDH8xXLUuOffq-KP-vMEZJJwgOcfM5gp7P2LeNfuA_qy4QKGnmQV0vmN6gNs3uRJdoE3Fc-GERpWvv00JF24sTYBhk7gBBbwPnhpW1lIqj_3rfHslqLEmFwKrRf0/s1600/ablog++7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj13vE7W4VY_D2tsL6IDH8xXLUuOffq-KP-vMEZJJwgOcfM5gp7P2LeNfuA_qy4QKGnmQV0vmN6gNs3uRJdoE3Fc-GERpWvv00JF24sTYBhk7gBBbwPnhpW1lIqj_3rfHslqLEmFwKrRf0/s1600/ablog++7.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Fitted under the back and behind the front with a little glue and a rivet it will be strong and give that extra interest to the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The rivet has been set and rings added to hold the necklace.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Side stations in vintage glass flowers and twisted pearls were added for a bit of interest. <br />

It's been a good summer. Busy with all kinds of projects and gathering both new and vintage materials. Also a lot of ceramic work in handmade and molded items. These filigree pieces were sold to me as Miriam Haskell components. Certainly vintage what ever the origin. I acquired a large lot of fine findings all from the 1940-1970 vintage. They are more delicate and filled with lovely details. The aged patina on these is a coppery gold and to make them into something new I simply added bronze ear wires.<br />

This transforms them into earrings and doesn't alter the original permanently. If a buyer were to buy these and toss the hooks and say make a bracelet, well that would be fine. That is the beauty of making simple things that can appeal on one level as jewelry but be available to become in some other person's hands something else.<br />

These are a few of my ceramic pieces from the recent past. I have fired and sold all but the Mother Nature piece. I am still trying to decide on what colors to use and whether to make a realistic or wild colored piece.She wont be a one only but part of a small series of doll adaptations with animals and cherubs. The doll is from an antique mold from around 1890. The birds are from a 1962 mold and remind me of Disney birds from cartoons.<br />

This is a project from a group that promotes Bsueboutiques.com Conceived on a Wednesday and finished by Friday. It has several layers of filigrees with the head pins sandwiched in between the layers. Color was added with Adirondack Inks and Lumiere paints. The skull is my handmade addition to the commercial components.<br />

This is another piece labeled as Haskell. I know its well made and will be worked into a necklace soon. The old finish has acquired some dark patina in spots and that will have to be modified before I can add color to this leaf and flower. As we move on into fall I will have some more seasonal pieces from my imagination to share with you.Harry's Handmade Jewelry Ideashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12807562015740332483noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1659884858170312278.post-5654101917251075082014-07-21T14:09:00.000-05:002014-07-21T14:09:26.355-05:00Book Review Jewelry For All Seasons by Linzi Alford<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I buy a lot of books. Some I read once lightly and others get a lot of use. This wonderful book by Linzi Alford fits in the well used category. She is a talented jewelry maker and writer living in the Lakes District in England. Her observations of the flowers and trees and all of nature has inspired her to photograph natural scenes. These have informed her jewelry making. The designs are fresh and original. And Linzi explains in detail how to create 24 bead and wire pieces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

What was just sitting there on that frame has been wrapped around a ring mandrel. Because it is high quality Silver plated brass with an elegant finish, I used a rawhide hammer to form it around the mandrel. Setting the partially bent ring on a wood block and using the mandrel to hold it down while pounding with the mallet on the ends draws it around without marks.<br />

The original came from Dr Brassy's new supply store on Etsy. I think I will cut up the rest and see what other forms emerge. The whole is nice but the parts are more numerous and in this case more fun. Give a new look at your stampings with an eye to finding the puzzle pieces. They are there. Don't forget to smooth the cut edges and polish them for a smooth fit.Harry's Handmade Jewelry Ideashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12807562015740332483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1659884858170312278.post-62344904804070804772014-05-20T14:31:00.000-05:002014-05-20T14:31:03.314-05:00Sharpie Doodles on Copper<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Once you get some etched pieces this book has many ideas how to make them into something special.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTNGfXoEkCKLBVpkaeg1DIas0WMP2v1qDDepk7uGI7jict7ZocmZrsFGkwztjqv6id-ITCMVEAVx9GJz2DVdPOPPmDjXvW6WlFwyLzgjwfc0E9vyXJYrx3uYl7kqjsDbZAjOUcrZ_bTEQ/s1600/blog+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTNGfXoEkCKLBVpkaeg1DIas0WMP2v1qDDepk7uGI7jict7ZocmZrsFGkwztjqv6id-ITCMVEAVx9GJz2DVdPOPPmDjXvW6WlFwyLzgjwfc0E9vyXJYrx3uYl7kqjsDbZAjOUcrZ_bTEQ/s1600/blog+4.jpg" height="161" width="320" /></a></div>
I started off today with some crude doodles on sanded copper. Using a permanent Sharpie in 3 different sizes, I sketched some not too elegant graffiti. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlezWtjre49XsOoFHT3qJpYjYx7bjoxtBmSXO9aazHwzxRIzQHzSgQP6-7Zw17m-DpnDA3VeKViN9mJoQ4G2wrFRS6rCXFoR_G6KAgtfUxKbcqJPDmKEpAiWwCxvb9fq1nZJ53_HCMHkY/s1600/blog+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlezWtjre49XsOoFHT3qJpYjYx7bjoxtBmSXO9aazHwzxRIzQHzSgQP6-7Zw17m-DpnDA3VeKViN9mJoQ4G2wrFRS6rCXFoR_G6KAgtfUxKbcqJPDmKEpAiWwCxvb9fq1nZJ53_HCMHkY/s1600/blog+5.jpg" height="144" width="320" /></a></div>
A backing of packing tape was rubbed on and left to extend to both sides.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQw99xHUBESRlz2Er7VcBCHuFrEixPfXzSQbbFM06YF2Di_tD2nuHq-s99A5ReM96HkymiPwuDBXXMNE5RZ_l9bVOP5cXO1PnVkU5YpTe50bODrqgedmHuJgEjGlTSr6EYRwgLmBOZ4Fo/s1600/blog+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQw99xHUBESRlz2Er7VcBCHuFrEixPfXzSQbbFM06YF2Di_tD2nuHq-s99A5ReM96HkymiPwuDBXXMNE5RZ_l9bVOP5cXO1PnVkU5YpTe50bODrqgedmHuJgEjGlTSr6EYRwgLmBOZ4Fo/s1600/blog+6.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Hard to see in this shot but the tape is attached to the sides of the container and the metal is just below the surface.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4pPHCxHEJG2ogvDrRAKYDHNzbP2h-YQJKZp8rILkykGTeeXsMDB2DD5xHOjqKunJwmGNGcN2oQfHOoI6_oFGBss0nhFcz3Md9GmN7Gi8mGyJW2Pe01djwudhyphenhyphen3eWOPze7i_T7lCroByc/s1600/blog+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4pPHCxHEJG2ogvDrRAKYDHNzbP2h-YQJKZp8rILkykGTeeXsMDB2DD5xHOjqKunJwmGNGcN2oQfHOoI6_oFGBss0nhFcz3Md9GmN7Gi8mGyJW2Pe01djwudhyphenhyphen3eWOPze7i_T7lCroByc/s1600/blog+7.jpg" height="320" width="299" /></a></div>
I checked after about 45 minutes and the etch was adequate. The etchant was allowed to drain.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-6RUIw2I1dBEdbeXHszXjKsaiL9eCdH1hyphenhyphen64x2utVG3DJBiD6P9KLvZSAWhjIwnPMSUMzo7h7Qc-DNuqJASVmKjhi3UYixPneEIsKvnxz6BoHdD11jBQ14323a8exiInvksQMaSelctU/s1600/blog+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-6RUIw2I1dBEdbeXHszXjKsaiL9eCdH1hyphenhyphen64x2utVG3DJBiD6P9KLvZSAWhjIwnPMSUMzo7h7Qc-DNuqJASVmKjhi3UYixPneEIsKvnxz6BoHdD11jBQ14323a8exiInvksQMaSelctU/s1600/blog+8.jpg" height="320" width="300" /></a></div>
Then the piece was set into a plastic box and covered with baking soda to neutralize the acid.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiE_VugxGGdaV0M7MdD5TzKWAYJKT6M0T-5iUv_Ke7AHzWPHlSAbr00N7RwJndHNWskObqiSG6YE_uPtM2a2PKK_Be3U3ZF99u7Qc81YKhcwSyfaO9zQ-4_4IutcF2hJ-BIzFjLhpHJjg/s1600/blog+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiE_VugxGGdaV0M7MdD5TzKWAYJKT6M0T-5iUv_Ke7AHzWPHlSAbr00N7RwJndHNWskObqiSG6YE_uPtM2a2PKK_Be3U3ZF99u7Qc81YKhcwSyfaO9zQ-4_4IutcF2hJ-BIzFjLhpHJjg/s1600/blog+9.jpg" height="156" width="320" /></a></div>
Next the copper was washed and scrubbed a bit after removing the tape. Since the color is dull and some of the marker is still evident, I took it to the fire bench.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv4NB0Ck2rhOjJ-jf637PxvMFTJSd49tqpsD1_S0dQ9DAwTztRyOBPUx4ngD_khbe6MV359YuzFJmhc8uJKQI2v8IsAXkpHNtCfaLmwSvvUpGErtnVWFO5woZ4tH4gR_QTDF7eNEvbxXQ/s1600/blog+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv4NB0Ck2rhOjJ-jf637PxvMFTJSd49tqpsD1_S0dQ9DAwTztRyOBPUx4ngD_khbe6MV359YuzFJmhc8uJKQI2v8IsAXkpHNtCfaLmwSvvUpGErtnVWFO5woZ4tH4gR_QTDF7eNEvbxXQ/s1600/blog+10.jpg" height="320" width="272" /></a></div>
It was placed on top of a steel screen on a tripod and flame painted. When all of the ink was gone and some color developed the metal was also annealed. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO8fHhLvV-wFf33ntLrmFvOY3Syf8O7uXUogA10gXcpS1Kh8ZFbIJIDwkvppGbjm2mGwv1MjHimVmeSp9pJ-zX8KtnG6-nW-m6g04z7iF17JT4KQIy5sGqAoe5viOLOB7q79UehWpQ7OY/s1600/blog+11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO8fHhLvV-wFf33ntLrmFvOY3Syf8O7uXUogA10gXcpS1Kh8ZFbIJIDwkvppGbjm2mGwv1MjHimVmeSp9pJ-zX8KtnG6-nW-m6g04z7iF17JT4KQIy5sGqAoe5viOLOB7q79UehWpQ7OY/s1600/blog+11.jpg" height="189" width="320" /></a></div>
This is just an intermediate step as more fun can take place on individual sections. First they are cut apart with light shears and trimmed down. Now the fun can begin. Next time I will show you what I do with the little sketches etched into the copper sheet.<br />

Where to buy, whether to share sources and how to stay fresh are always topics in most jewelry groups.<br />
I have been using 4 or 5 sources for much of my purchases the last few years. Each has some pluses and a few negatives. My pet peeve is when the source carries something erratically. Go there once and see something interesting but when we go back to purchase it we find it out of stock or no longer carried. Unless you buy many identical pieces when you see them you are at risk of being disappointed. Having many sources for the same products is best. But that can lead to stagnation, so I constantly hunt for new sources, whether it is for stamped metal, beads, or wire.<br />
<br />
I want to introduce you to a new player https://www.etsy.com/shop/SteampunkSupplyStore. You probably recognize the owner as an active jewelry artist. Inventor of the trademarked and coyprighted Sightmares and growing celebrity Dr Brassy Steamington.<br />
<br />
Dr Brassy has over 25 pages of excellent metal stampings. The stock ranges from common items in many finishes to more unusual stampings with a bit of edge. I went through https://www.etsy.com/shop/SteampunkSupplyStore page by page this afternoon and placed an order. I was pleasantly surprised at the sensible prices and the excellent variety of finishes. Dr Brassy is carrying many colors no one else has. And many stampings I have not seen elsewhere.<br />
